Common divorce regrets

It can be difficult to focus on the long-term when you're in the middle of a divorce. However, living too much in the moment and letting your emotions take over can lead to poor decisions. Here are three of the most common divorce regrets and how to avoid having them.

1. Arguing for the sake of arguing. It's tempting to take out your feelings of anger, hurt and betrayal on your ex by fighting every step of the way. However, the main person you're hurting by this is yourself. Adding to the conflict just makes the divorce process harder, longer and more costly, and it can do irreparable damage to your co-parenting relationship after the fact. Approaching your divorce as neutrally and objectively as possible can help you keep your emotions in check and your decisions logical.

2. Holding on to the house. It's normal to want to stay in the marital home, particularly if you have children. However, it can be a huge financial drain for many people. In many cases, one party will have to buy out the other to retain the home, which can take a huge portion of the money the buyer otherwise would have gotten in the divorce settlement. It's also common to underestimate how difficult it will be to maintain the home on one income. If you think you want to stay in the house, it's important to discuss the situation thoroughly with your lawyer so that you are aware of the possible issues and pitfalls.

3. Making snap decisions. It's understandable to just want the divorce over as quickly as possible, but rushing to make decisions or agreeing to a settlement prematurely can lead to big problems. Talking to your lawyer throughout the process can help you stay on track and ensure you're thinking through your choices and weighing your options.
