Though many people follow the lives of celebrities as if their trials and tribulations were meant solely for entertainment, the truth is they are human beings, too. Many of the issues they deal with differ little from the ones everyday people handle as well. By way of example, a famous singer with an Ontario connection and his actress ex-wife are currently embroiled in a bitter child custody dispute, and it's the kind of situation that happens to many divorced parents.
Singer Robin Thicke and actress Paula Patton have been divorced since 2014, but the dispute over their now 6-year-old son continues to this day. On Jan. 5, a judge rejected Patton's request to limit Thicke's access to the young boy. She claims he ex has been abusing the child and that the boy is now afraid of his father. Patton further expressed concerns about Thicke's use of drugs and alcohol.
Later that day Patton had someone pick up her son from school, despite the fact that Thicke was supposed to be with the boy that evening. When the child did not attend school the next day, police paid a visit to Patton's home to check on the situation. Despite her claims regarding their son being distraught, Thicke counters that the child only ever seems emotionally unbalanced when his mother is present. He believes the entire matter has been a revenge ploy by his ex for not being allowed to attend a memorial service in December for Thicke's father, Canadian actor Alan Thicke.
Situations like this are extremely difficult to manage. The child's welfare should be of utmost concern for all parties, but it is not unknown for one parent to attempt to alienate the other from a child via accusations of mistreatment or unseemly behaviour. It is hoped that most child custody issues can be worked out in a peaceful and collaborative fashion. When they can't however, it is important to act in accordance with Ontario law and with the child's best interests in mind. During a troublesome custody dispute, the counsel of a family law attorney may be of great benefit.
